First consultation

During this appointment, we carefully examine the teeth, the bite and the development of the jaws. Depending on the needs, additional records may then be suggested, such as X-rays, photographs or digital impressions.

After this first assessment, we clearly explain our findings, whether treatment is indicated, the most appropriate time to start it, and the main outlines of how it would proceed.

This consultation is a time for dialogue. It gives you the opportunity to ask your questions and receive clear, personalized information suited to your situation.

Frequently asked questions

At what age should a child be seen?

A first orthodontic check-up is recommended around age 7, unless your dentist feels, for specific reasons, that it should take place earlier. In most cases, this check-up does not lead to immediate treatment but to monitoring of growth. There is no age limit: adults can be treated too.

How long does treatment take?

It depends on the initial situation and the type of treatment, which may be carried out in one or two phases. A first phase, in the mixed dentition (when baby teeth and permanent teeth are both present), usually lasts 9 to 18 months. Treatment in the permanent dentition lasts 18 to 36 months, depending on the severity of the problem. You will be given an estimated duration when the treatment plan is presented.

Is treatment covered by insurance?

Swiss basic health insurance (LAMal) generally does not cover orthodontic treatment, except in specific situations defined by law. A supplementary dental insurance policy may cover part of the costs, depending on the contract. It is best to take one out early: later on, a dental examination is often required, and an orthodontic need that has already been identified may be excluded from coverage.

When does Disability Insurance (AI) cover treatment?

The Swiss Disability Insurance (AI) covers certain congenital conditions of the teeth and jaws, such as cleft lip and palate, the congenital absence of several teeth or certain severe jaw discrepancies, when specific criteria are met. The assessment is based on a clinical examination and X-rays. Coverage must be granted by the AI office and applies up to age 20. Our specialists are certified by the AI and will tell you whether an application is justified.

What happens after treatment?

A retention phase always follows: a wire bonded behind the teeth or a removable retainer worn at night maintains the result. Because teeth tend to move throughout life, retention is often continued for several years.
