Practical advice
A few simple habits support treatment day to day and help it go smoothly.
Oral hygiene
Careful oral hygiene is essential during orthodontic treatment, especially with a fixed appliance. Thorough brushing after meals, supplemented where needed by suitable cleaning aids, keeps teeth and gums healthy.
Diet
Some foods can damage the appliance or interfere with how it works. It is best to avoid very hard or sticky foods and, in general, to chew carefully.
Removable appliances and aligners
When a removable appliance or aligners have been prescribed, their effectiveness depends on wearing them consistently. When not in use, they should be kept safely in their protective case.
Pain and discomfort
After an appliance is placed or adjusted, some temporary soreness may occur. This is common and usually eases on its own within a few days. For localized irritation, orthodontic wax can provide welcome relief.
Minor problems
A bracket may come loose, a wire may become uncomfortable or an appliance may be damaged. Although these situations are usually not urgent, please contact the practice so we can give you the right advice. See also the Emergencies page.

Every situation is different, so we are always available to guide you if you have a question or a difficulty during treatment.
